California has experienced one of the worst economic downturns in our lifetime. In Sacramento, past budget decisions coupled with this economic slowdown have resulted in record deficits.

And yet, I see hope on the horizon.

My main focus since you elected me as your representative to the California State Assembly in November 2008 has been to make government more efficient, promote job growth and economic recovery, and fight for the issues important to you. I’ve worked to protect education, parks, the environment, public safety, transportation and health care services while balancing the state budget. Preserving and improving California’s education system and encouraging job growth and new business must be the cornerstones of the solution to our state’s current financial problems.

The legislative reforms I’ve authored save the state millions of dollars by requiring agencies to use electronic transactions which also reduces environmental impacts. I’m working hard on government reforms that will make the actions of the legislature and state agencies more transparent and accountable.

As Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Biotechnology I have worked to make sure state government fosters the continued success of the life sciences industry which employs over 15,000 people in San Mateo County.
